Smoking hookah pipes and then swaying your head on “Dum Maro Dum” may feel like the hip and happening thing. But if you continue doing so then soon, Yamraj and Chitragupt will be counting days to come down to fetch you! Yes, you heard it right! And whosoever told you that hookah pipes are safer than cigarettes was either misinformed or simply hated you.
Recent research has found that people who use hookah pipes are in reality inhaling a lot more carbon monoxide than the people who smoke cigarettes. Read this article to know why hookah is bad for you and why you should quit the habit if you want to live a long and healthy life.
What is a Hookah?
Hookah or shisha is a water pipe. It was invented by Akbar’s Persian physician named Abu’l-Fath Gilani. It contains two chambers, a water chamber, and a tobacco chamber. The water chamber opens into single or multiple stems from where a person can draw cool smoke. In Hookah, flavored tobacco is used widely, however, sometimes even cannabis, hashish, or opium is used.
In the tobacco chamber, there is a bowl in which charcoal is placed over the tobacco. Both are separated by a perforated aluminium foil. The charcoal heats the tobacco and creates smoke. The smoke then passes through the water chamber and into the stems for inhalation.
Hookah is popular among the younger generation all around the world. Mostly because it is widely believed that the health hazards of tobacco are reduced due to the smoke passing through water. But this is far from true. Reality is that neither the nicotine nor other harmful toxins are filtered out in the hookah. Don’t be fooled by such misconceptions floating around. And mind you, these harmful substances can cause a number of health hazards discussed below.
Health Hazards of smoking Hookah
Similar to a cigarette, a hookah contains harmful toxins like nicotine, carbon monoxide, tar, arsenic, chromium, cadmium, cobalt, etc. On an average, a hookah contains nicotine as much as whooping 100 cigarettes. And now imagine inhaling the smoke of 100 cigarettes for 30 to 45 minutes. Sounds scary, isn’t it?
Moreover, hookah is as addictive as a cigarette. It may put you at risk of developing heart and lung diseases. The charcoal produces toxic substances which can cause cancer of the lung, mouth, stomach, etc. Hookah smoking can also cause infertility. And even if you are able to produce babies, your little ones will also be at risk of developing respiratory illnesses.
And this will affect you even if you are an innocent passive smoker. Hence, avoid secondhand smoke at all costs.
Since the Hookah pipe is shared by multiple people, it is a reservoir for transmitting infectious diseases like cold, covid, or even oral herpes. Eww! So, Hookah smoking can be even more harmful and dangerous than cigarette smoking. It is wise to quit the habit of smoking altogether if you do not want to die of an heart attack, stroke or cancer.
According to WHO, in India, nearly 1.35 million people die every year due to smoking.
So, next time someone offers you to smoke hookah saying it’s just filtered water, then simply picture yourself smoking 100 cigarettes at once. This shall prevent you from touching it. Protect your vital organs from these harmful substances. If you have taken up smoking to reduce stress or emotional issues, then you should consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist to address stress. Alternatively, you can also learn mindfulness meditation to overcome your problems.
If you think smoking makes you cool then you should reconsider this notion because none of this coolness matters if the habit lands you in a graveyard. Protect yourself from substance abuse!
