WHAT IS APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ACV)?

You must have heard from your friend’s paternal Aunt’s second daughter’s friend about how apple cider vinegar can improve your health and cause weight loss. It’s the in thing nowadays. You rush to check with your Momma in kitchen if there is any stock. Mom asks do you even know what apple cider vinegar is? Well do you?

As the process of making vinegar goes, fresh apples are crushed and fermented into alcohol by adding yeast. To this alcoholic mixture, healthy bacteria are added which convert alcohol to vinegar. In unfiltered ACV, a cloudy foam is formed which is called the ‘mother’. Mother contains nutrients and healthy bacteria.[ii]

In addition to this, ACV contains a variety of vitamins , minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese and boron, essential enzymes required for digestion, fiber and antioxidants like beta carotene. It is very low in calories.

The main nutrient is Potassium which helps in muscle contraction, fluid balancing, regulation of blood pressure, and reducing water retention.

Important points to remember while consuming ACV

Apple cider vinegar or vinegar of any type is a mild version of acetic acid, hence it should always be diluted in water before consuming. You can safely consume 1 to 2 teaspoon of ACV everyday.

Since it is acidic in nature, rinse your mouth with water immediately after consuming. Don’t brush teeth, wait for 20 to 30 mins.

When you are buying ACV, check if its Organic, raw and unfiltered. Filtered varieties remove the ‘mother’ from ACV which contains healthy bacteria and enzymes. So if you see a sediment floating at the bottom, that is the mother. Even avoid the ACV pill because again it is the processed version. Store the bottle in a cool, dry and dark place.
